How do you manage over a million passengers each month while also minimizing carbon emissions from airport operations? At Finavia, this challenge is approached comprehensively, and Alltime has played a crucial role in maintenance for several years. During the winter season you might for instance notice the first fully electric wheel loader in production use on the premises!
Finavia’s goal is to provide an excellent customer experience to over a million monthly users at Helsinki Airport and achieve net-zero emissions in its operations by 2024. A smooth customer experience begins upon arrival at the airport. Therefore Alltime, overseeing outdoor area maintenance at the airport, plays a vital role in facilitating the seamless arrival and departure of countless passengers arriving by taxi, bus, or personal vehicle.
“We aim to offer every passenger a nice and smooth customer experience, and Alltime is crucial in maintaining the outdoor areas at Helsinki Airport. As a partner, Alltime responds quickly to our feedback, and special service requests have been successfully executed,” says Pyry Pennanen, Maintenance Manager at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, Finavia, describing the ongoing collaboration.
Finavia has been carbon neutral at Helsinki Airport since 2017. Ambitious sustainability targets also reflect expectations towards its partners. For example, procurement and service provider selections consider financial, social, and environmental responsibility factors.
“In our maintenance equipment, we use renewable fuels or electric equipment. It’s important to us that our partners are also actively working to promote sustainable aviation,” Pennanen explains. “We advance responsible procurement through our ethical principles, aiming for our key suppliers, including Alltime, to follow these principles. We source services that are produced with economic, social, and environmental responsibility taken into account.”
As a concrete response to this challenge, Alltime has piloted an electric wheel loader at Helsinki Airport’s outdoor areas during winter 2024. This is the first fully electric heavy-duty vehicle of its kind used in production at Alltime, although converting it has been coverting its car fleet and smaller machines to electric already for some time. Experiences gained from the pilot will help evaluate the use of electric heavy equipment in the future.
