Alltime Finland has been awarded the comprehensive waterway maintenance contract and remote monitoring service for the Port of Inkoo, operated by Inkoo Shipping Oy.

The contract covers the full scope of the port’s waterway maintenance operations. Alltime will be responsible for the maintenance of the area’s maritime navigation aids, as well as the installation and operation of the remote monitoring system. The project includes 20 maritime navigation aids, all of which will be connected to the remote monitoring platform.

Through the agreement, the Port of Inkoo will become the first port in Finland where all maritime navigation aids are remotely monitored. The solution delivers significant benefits from both a safety and environmental perspective.

Remote monitoring is transforming maintenance operations

Traditionally, the condition of maritime navigation aids and safety equipment – such as buoys and beacons – has been verified manually through regular maintenance visits carried out by workboats. With Alltime’s remote monitoring solution, inspections such as tracking the exact position and status of navigation aids can now be carried out continuously and remotely. This significantly reduces the need for physical inspection visits by boat.

“Continuous real-time situational awareness and rapid response capabilities are essential in infrastructure maintenance. With remote monitoring, these can now be achieved while reducing the environmental footprint of service production to a fraction compared to traditional maintenance operations,” says Antti Sappinen, Business Director, Infrastructure maintenance on waterways.

In practice, maintenance visits will only be carried out when needed, for example in fault situations. This improves operational efficiency and enhances service quality.

“Thanks to remote monitoring, maintenance actions and inspections can be initiated almost immediately when issues are detected. The condition of the equipment is monitored continuously, and maintenance is no longer based solely on scheduled inspections,” Sappinen continues.

Condition-based maintenance supports emission reduction

The introduction of remote monitoring has a clear positive impact on the carbon footprint of maintenance operations. Reducing unnecessary inspection visits also reduces emissions generated by workboat operations.

According to Alltime’s estimates, in a site similar to Port of Inkoo, a single scheduled maintenance round can generate close to 3,000 kg of CO₂e emissions. Depending on the number of maintenance visits ultimately required, the company estimates that annual emissions from waterwayt maintenance operations at the Port of Inkoo alone could be reduced by several tonnes of CO₂e.

The City of Rovaniemi has made a procurement decision in its street maintenance tender for the years 2024–2029, selecting Alltime as the main contractor. The expected annual value of the decision is approximately 3.6 million euros, subject to final confirmation after the appeal period and contract negotiations.

The deal also includes an option for snow plowing at property intersections. Alltime has been responsible for Rovaniemi’s street maintenance under the current fixed-term contract period, which began in 2019.

“I am very pleased that we can continue our smooth collaboration with the City of Rovaniemi. We are committed to continuously improving our operations, and I believe that with the experience of the past five years, we are well-positioned to meet the city’s quality expectations,” says Ville Komulainen, Business Director, Infrastructure services on land. “This is also excellent news for our infrastructure services team in Rovaniemi, whose efforts have contributed to a safe and smooth everyday for the city’s residents.”
